The
legend of Valentine's Day is about as complex as the most intricate
love affair. The only thing most experts agree on is that it
probably has its roots in ancient Rome. But they're divided on
whether it originated with the mid-February celebration of the
marriage of Zeus and Hera or with another pagan Roman rite, or
whether it was entirely the doing of a certain Saint Valentine.
And if it was Saint Valentine, who exactly was he? Valentine
was a relatively common Roman and medieval name, and there were
plenty of Christian martyrs who bore it. Was it the Valentine who
was jailed for his beliefs and then fell in love with the daughter
of his jailer? Legend has it that before he was executed, he sent
her a love note signed, "From Your Valentine".
Or was it the
3rd century Christian priest named Valentine who defied Emperor
Claudius II's edict forbidding marriage during wartime? Claudius
thought that single men made better soldiers, but Valentine
continued to perform marriages in secret until he was caught and
executed.
In 496 A.D., Pope Gelasius supposedly declared
February 14th to be the Feast Day of Saint Valentine, the Patron
Saint of Lovers and Engaged Couples. However, historians point to
the fact that in medieval times, there were more than 50 martyred
Christians by the name of Valentine. Any of them could be our
beloved Saint.
However, one thing we do know for sure is
that we created the online ad ABSOLUT SOULMATES to commemorate
Valentine's Day. And we know that the most irresistible way to
celebrate February 14th is to mix up an ABSOLUT FLIRTINI for
whomever it is that makes your heart beat faster.

Helmut Newton, one of the greatest fashion
photographers of modern times, has passed away at the age of 83. He
will be remembered as a truly international artist who was never
afraid of provoking a reaction.
Newton's relationship with
ABSOLUT began in 1995, when he worked with ABSOLUT on the brand's
first international fashion design portfolio – ABSOLUT NEWTON, a
campaign featuring eight highly fashionable creations. It was while
shooting this ad series that Newton first visited Åhus, the small
town in southern Sweden where all ABSOLUT is produced. Inspired by
the surroundings, he expressed an interest in returning there to
capture the dramatic vistas through his lens.
And this he
did for the ABSOLUTLY project, first published in 2001. An
eight-page ad insert, showing the origins of great natural beauty of
all ABSOLUT, as interpreted by Newton, was the result.
Newton was best known for his photographs of women, and this
seems to have irritated him to some extent. With regard to his
photos for ABSOLUT, he commented: "I had to wait until I turned 80
to see someone, finally, take an interest in my landscapes. [...]
For this reason, I loved doing this campaign for ABSOLUT. It was my
first commission of this kind."
Helmut Newton died on
January 23 in a car crash in Los Angeles – he worked right up to his
last day. He is mourned by his wife.

Ever wondered why your ABSOLUT tastes
the way it does? Each flavor has a long process behind it, monitored
by a person for whom taste is an entire profession - a flavorist.
You can create nearly any flavor. Ljiljana Krickic,
flavorist at V&S Absolut Spirits, studied chemistry for four
years at the University of Belgrade and has an acute sense of taste
and smell - plus a whole lot of experience from the world of flavor.
It always starts with a brief from the marketing department.
Say, after extensive surveys, they have determined that vanilla is
what the world's bars are longing for. Once they have decided what
to launch and when, the flavorists are called in.
In a
refrigerated room in Åhus, rows of flavorings and aromas stand like
a reference library, and flavoring suppliers from all over the world
send their samples here. Because just like when you're painting your
house and realize there's a big difference between green and green,
well, there's just as much difference between vanilla and vanilla.
But vanilla - if we continue with that example - is just the
beginning. The ABSOLUT flavorists read the brief and add their own
ingredients, depending on whether they want it rich, creamy,
chocolaty, sweet, or something else.
Different aromas are
added in varying quantities to shape the character of the
composition, which is then given to a reference group for
evaluation. One by one, the samples are eliminated until eventually
only one is left - well on its way to becoming the next ABSOLUT
flavor. |
